George C. Arnold Addition | Cocoon

George C Arnold Building, Providence, RI - 2022

RISD School of Architecture

Spring Studio led by Prof. Cara Liberatore

This project works from organizational, structural, and formal ideas to design addition of the George C. Arnold Building through the concepts

of “Double or Nothing.” “Double” offers aesthetic clarity and relative freedom but tends to neutralize existing aesthetics, cultures, and histories.

On the other hand, “nothing” might be a replica of the existing - an attempt to hide in plain sight. Cocoon’s approach for the Arnold building

will consider both double and nothing. The double considered turning private spaces into public spaces for communities to gather. Nothing is

regarded as lifting the addition to allow people to engage with the original building. The expansion will create a public reading space for the

community to imagine and share their creativity.
